What’s Happening | May 4, 5, & 6

Looking for something to do this weekend? Here’s a list of events and activities happening in the greater Shippensburg area May 4 – 6, 2018.

Orrstown

Maple Lane Nursery (6471 Park Rd.) is having an Open House on May 5, 8AM – 5PM.  Everything in stock will be 10% off on Saturday.  Door Prizes and Refreshments.  Maple Lane has a large selection of perennials, trees, and shrubbery.

Newville/Carlisle

This week the Cumberland Drive-In Theatre is open Friday through Sunday, May 4-6.  Showing will be “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Black Panther.”  Gates open at 7PM.  First feature begins at approximately 8:10PM.  Admission: $8 Adults, $4 Children ages 3-12, free for Children Under 3.

The UPMC Pinnacle Downtown Carlisle First Friday will take place on Friday, May 4 from 5-8PM. The theme for First Friday will be “peace through heritage.”  For the evening’s activities click here.

The Amani Festival is a one-day multi-cultural festival on May 5, 9AM – 6PM in downtown Carlisle.  Amani means “peace” in Swahili. The festival will include over 70 vendors (food, arts & crafts, local businesses), live entertainment and music, a children’s alley, and more.

The spring Eastern National Antique Show hosts approximately 70 quality dealers of fine glass, china, jewelry and more. Food will be available for purchase and there is free parking.  The event is May 4-5 at the Carlisle Expo Center, 100 K St.  Friday 10AM to 5PM; Saturday 10AM to 4PM. $8; children 12 and under are free.

The Best Kept Secrets Tour is a shopping, food, and fun tour designed to help you find the tucked away treasures in the counties of Pennsylvania.  The Cumberland County Tour featuring 28 “best kept secrets” is April 19 through May 5, 2018.  Tickets are $10 each with $1 donated to Project Share.

Gardners

Join the Appalachian Trail Museum at their Festival on May 5 to honor those who made the Appalachian Trail what it is today. Enjoy Appalachian mountain music and a picnic lunch free of charge and welcome to all.  There will also be activities and games for both adults and children including a scavenger hunt and leave no trace related games. The festival will be held at the Pine Grove Furnace State Park around the Furnace Stack Pavilion and AT Museum grounds from 11AM until 3PM.

Dillsburg

Haars Drive In in Dillsburg is opening for 2018 season on May 4-5 2018.  Showing will be “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Black Panther.”  Gates open at 7PM.  First feature begins at approximately 8:10PM.

Mechanicsburg

Customer Appreciation Days are coming to all five CommunityAid Thrift Store locations.  Shop Thursday, May 3 through Sunday, May 6 and everything in the store is 50% off (no exceptions and no exclusions)!  CommunityAid has stores in Mechanicsburg, Hanover, Harrisburg, Lancaster, and Selinsgrove.  Thrift Store hours are Monday through Saturday 9AM to 9PM and Sunday 11AM to 6PM.

The Mechanicsburg Music Alliance is excited to host the 4th Annual Art and Craft Show on Saturday May 5. This will be located at the Mechanicsburg Middle School from 10AM – 3PM.  A juried event featuring unique, handcrafted items.

Chambersburg

The Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter will host a 5K-9 Run and 1-mile Whisker Walk at 6:30PM, Friday, May 4, at the shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Road West.  Registration will be held from 5:30 to 6:15PM, with the run beginning at 6:30. The whisker walk will start at 6:45 and an awards ceremony will be held at 7:30. Complimentary goody bags and food and beverages will be available.

The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary will host its 27th annual fabric fair at the PA National Guard Armory.  Wednesday, May 2, 8am – 5pm;  Thursday, May 3, 8am – 5pm;  Friday, May 4, 8am – 8pm;  Saturday, May 5, 8am – 1pm.  Items for sale include books (how to, etc.), patterns, quilting supplies, fabric, linens, sewing notions, window treatments, sewing machines, yarn, craft items, dolls and accessories, antiques, & more!  PA National Guard Armory is at 1010 Lincoln Way West (Route 30).

Chambersburg’s First Friday kicks off May 5 with all things “Star Wars.”  Scroll through the Facebook Event HERE for activities.

The Inn at Ragged Edge is hosting a free classical piano and violin concert featuring Eric Himy and Emil Chudnovsky on Sunday, May 6 , 4PM.  Light refreshments will be served. Seating is limited so call or text 717-658-2687 or email info@theinnatraggededge to reserve your seat.

Shalom Christian Academy’s 41st annual Dutchfest will be held on May 4 & 5 and includes fun for the entire family.  Free admission and parking.  There is a fee for children’s activities ($6 – all day wrist bands, $10 – all weekend wrist bands, 50¢ – single tickets).  Friday, May 4 (5PM – 9PM); Saturday, May 5 (7:30AM – 2PM)  Highlights include:  Food; Auction events; Craft & Vendor show;  Children’s activities, bounce houses, and petting zoo; 5K Run/1K Fun Walk for the whole family; Used book sale.  For the complete schedule, view their website here.

Chambersburg Noontime Lions Club is having their Annual Trout Derby Saturday, May 5 & Sunday, May 6.  Read more HERE.

8th annual Blues, Brews & Barbecue benefits the Capitol Theatre Center.  On May 5, 1PM – 7 PM, rain or shine, outside at 159 S. Main St., Chambersburg, live bands, barbecue, beer and wine.  $10 admission, $7 for designated driver.  No pets.  For information and tickets, go here.

Waynesboro

The first day for the Red Run Express will be this Sunday 1-4PM. They are only open on Sundays during the month of May.  Regular weekends will begin after Memorial Day.  The Red Run Express is a miniature train located at Red Run Park in Rouzerville.  Rides are always free, donations are gladly accepted.

Greencastle

Mason Dixon BBQ Services is excited to announce the first ever Wing Thing Chicken Wing Competition to be held on Saturday, May 5, 9AM – 3PM at their location at 1542 Buchanan Trail East, across from Manitowoc on Rt. 16, in Greencastle.

Hagerstown, MD

Cancelled  Hagerstown Regional Airport and the Hagerstown Aviation Museum will be offering a behind-the-scenes look at Hagerstown-built aircraft during Open Airplane Afternoon, Sunday May 6 from 1PM – 4PM.  Bring the family out to the Hagerstown Regional Airport to climb aboard and sit in the cockpit of the historic Fairchild C-82 and C-119 Flying Boxcars and PT-26 WWII trainer aircraft.  FREE admission (donations accepted).  Event is rain or shine.

Washington D.C.

The Around the World Embassy Tour is the signature event of Passport DC, an annual celebration of international culture in Washington DC.  Fifty-two embassies are expected to open their doors on May 5.  From 10AM – 4PM, participants can travel the world as they experience the food, art, dance, fashion, and music of different countries.  In the days leading up to the event, Cultural Tourism DC will release a full list of participating embassies and a map.  There is no charge to participate in Around the World Embassy Tour and tickets are not required.
