What’s Happening | May 3 – 5

Looking for something to do this weekend? Here’s a list of events and activities happening in the greater Shippensburg area May 3 – 5, 2019.

Shippensburg

Friday, May 3 is a Ship First Friday at the Shippensburg Station.  There will be a beer tent, food truck, and live music from 4:30 – 7:30PM.

On Friday, May 3 at 8PM the Shippensburg Historical Society invites you to come out and enjoy a campfire and special presentation.  Admission is free.  Just bring a lawn chair or blanket and history and s’mores will be provided!

STCC Park & Rec, Hoagy’s Heroes and Uncle Eddie’s BBQ will be hosting a Pony Ride RTE Saturday, May 4 from 11AM – 4PM.  Get on the bike and head to the park at 180 Airport Road for an afternoon of delicious food and live music.

Roxbury

There is public skating at the Blue Mountain Skating Rink on Friday evenings from 7-9 PM. $4 admission and $1 skates. Children under 6 are free and non-skating adults are free as well.

Newville/Carlisle

Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School (GBLUES) Garden Days at Hilltop Greenhouse will be held this Friday and Saturday, May 3 and 4.  Hilltop Greenhouse will donate 25% of all sales on both May 3 & 4 to the GBLUES PTO when you present the flyer below.  A wide variety of annuals, perennials, herbs, and vegetables will be available at great prices!

This week the Cumberland Drive-In Theatre is open Friday through Sunday, May 3-5.  Showing will be a single feature “Avengers: Endgame.”  Gates open at 7PM.   Movie begins at approximately 8:30PM.  Admission: $8 Adults, $4 Children ages 3-12, free for Children Under 3.

On Saturday, May 4 from 9AM – Noon, you can take your children to Home Depot to make a wooden masterpiece for FREE.  Kids will make a handmade blooming art piece to gift or put on display.  Once it is built, your child will decorate it with paint.  While this event is free, pre-registration is required. The UPMC Pinnacle Downtown Carlisle First Friday will take place on Friday, May 3.  The First Friday Series starts off with a celebration of the diverse fabric of nationalities and beliefs in Cumberland County and America.

The Amani Festival is a one-day multi-cultural festival on May 4, 9AM – 6PM in downtown Carlisle.  Amani means “peace” in Swahili. The festival will include 80+ vendors, live music, a petting zoo, arts & crafts vendors, a children’s alley, and much more.

The spring Eastern National Antique Show hosts approximately 70 quality dealers of fine glass, china, jewelry and more. Food will be available for purchase and there is free parking.  The event is May 3-4 at the Carlisle Expo Center, 100 K St.  Friday 10AM to 5PM; Saturday 10AM to 4PM. $8; children 12 and under are free.

Dillsburg

Haars Drive In in Dillsburg is opening for 2019 season on May 3-4.  Showing will be “Avengers: Endgame” at dusk.

Mechanicsburg

Customer Appreciation Days are coming to all five CommunityAid Thrift Store locations.  Shop Thursday, May 2 through Sunday, May 5 and everything in the store is 50% off (no exceptions and no exclusions)!  CommunityAid has stores in Mechanicsburg, Hanover, Harrisburg, Lancaster, and Selinsgrove.  Thrift Store hours are Monday through Saturday 9AM to 9PM and Sunday 11AM to 6PM.

Chambersburg

The Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter will host a 5K-9 Run and 1-mile Whisker Walk at 6:30PM, Friday, May 3, at the shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Road West.

The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary will host its 28th annual fabric fair at the PA National Guard Armory. Wednesday, May 1,  8am – 5pm, Thursday, May 2,  8am – 4pm, Friday, May 3,  8am – 8pm, Saturday, May 4,  8am – 1pm.  Items for sale include all types of fabric off the bolt, by the piece, or by the bag; quilting supplies; sewing machines, sewing notions, patterns, and “how-to” books; knitting/crocheting yarn and supplies; needlework supplies; craft items; dolls and accessories; linens, window treatments and so much more.

Chambersburg’s First Friday kicks off May 3 with a nod to the arts.  Scroll through the Facebook Event HERE for activities.

Shalom Christian Academy’s 42nd annual Dutchfest will be held on May 3 & 4, 2019 and includes FUN for the entire family.  Free admission and parking.  There is a fee for children’s activities ($6 – all day wrist bands, $10 – all weekend wrist bands, 50¢ – single tickets).  Friday, May 3 (5PM – 9PM), Saturday, May 4 (7:30AM – 2PM)  Highlights include:  Food (pork BBQ sandwiches & home-style dutch foods); Auction events; Craft & Vendor show;  Children’s activities, bounce houses, and petting zoo; 5K Run/1K Fun Walk for the whole family; Used book sale.  For the complete schedule, view their website here.

There will be a wildlife festival by the Foundation for Animal Rescue & Education and Little Ray’s Nature Centre at the Chambersburg Mall on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 & 5 from 10AM – 5PM.  25 live animal exhibits, 2 education programs, and more.  Single Admission: $14.00, Kids under 2 are free.

Chambersburg Noontime Lions Club is having their Annual Trout Derby Saturday, May 4 & Sunday, May 5.

This Saturday is the 9th annual Blues, Brews & Barbecue to benefit the Capitol Theatre Center.  On May 4, 1PM – 7PM, rain or shine, outside at 159 S. Main St., Chambersburg, live bands, barbecue, beer and wine.  $12 admission, $9 for designated driver.  For information and tickets, go here.

Biglerville

Visit Hollabaugh farms for their annual Bees n’ Blossoms festival, May 4 & 5, Noon – 4:30PM.  The event will feature wagon rides, “Beauty and the Bees” Fairytale Trail, bounce house, informational sessions about bees, pollination, and other pests on the farm, local children’s author Kelly Hastings hosting a book reading and signing, food stand, Seeds for Bees kids’ activity and more.  The festival is free to the public and will be held rain or shine.  Please note that a few activities are pay as you go.  On Saturday, May 4 from 9AM-11AM, Hollabaugh farms will host an All You Can Eat pancake breakfast.  Cost: $7.00/Adults, $4.00/Kids ages 3-10, 2 and under FREE!

Hagerstown, MD

Hagerstown Regional Airport and the Hagerstown Aviation Museum will be offering a behind-the-scenes look at Hagerstown-built aircraft during an Open Airplane Afternoon, Sunday, May 5, 1-4PM.  Bring the family out to the Hagerstown Regional Airport to climb aboard and sit in the cockpit of the historic aircraft.  FREE admission (donations accepted).  Free museum aircraft collection poster for all guests.  Event is rain or shine.

Washington D.C.

The Around the World Embassy Tour is the signature event of Passport DC, an annual celebration of international culture in Washington DC.  More than 40 embassies are expected to open their doors on May 4.  From 10AM – 4PM, participants will travel the world as they experience the food, art, dance, fashion, and music of different countries.  There is no charge to participate in Around the World Embassy Tour and tickets are not required. It is recommended that you take a form of government-issued identification with you.
