Here’s a list of opportunities to get out and about Labor Day weekend 2019!
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is offering two special fishing opportunities to entice adults and kids to fish on Labor Day, September 2! The first is a $1 license for adult residents and non-residents. The second opportunity is the Mentored Youth Panfish Day.
SHIPPENSBURG
The Demolition Derby takes place August 31, 7:30PM at the Shippensburg Fairgrounds. The annual event is held the Saturday before Labor Day and features local drivers who deliberately ram their vehicles into one another. The last driver whose vehicle is still operational is awarded the victory. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food is available for purchase. Tickets: $10, Ages 7-11 $5, Children 6 & under Free.
The 39th annual Shippensburg Corn Festival will be held Saturday, August 31 from 8AM – 4PM, rain or shine. Downtown streets are closed to traffic and transformed into a huge street fair for the day. There will be more than 250 craft and food vendors, an antique car show, and a corn eating contest. Entertainers perform all day at three sites and there are a variety of strolling acts and demonstrations. Parking for the Corn Festival is available at the Shippensburg Fairgrounds for $4. A free shuttle bus is provided from the fairgrounds to the center of the festival at King and Earl Streets. There is also parking at numerous private lots throughout town.
ROXBURY
The Lurgan Township Lions Club Bull Ride will be held on Saturday, August 31 at 7PM. Gates open at 5PM. Tickets at the gate are $20 adult and $15 for ages 6 – 12. Children 5 and under are free. Lurgan Township Lions Club is located at 13978 Cumberland Hwy in Roxbury.
CHAMBERSBURG/FAYETTEVILLE
The Sunflower Field just outside of Chambersburg is now in bloom! Each year, farmers at Lesher Poultry Farm plant sunflowers in a different location around Chambersburg, PA. The 2019 sunflower field is located at the intersection of 316 and SR 914 in Guilford Township, Franklin County. If using a GPS you may use the address for Solomon’s United Church of Christ, 1594 Swamp Fox Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202 as the field is across from the church. Please remember to pull over safely as you view these flowers. Visitors should not park on the road or in driveways. There are unplanted safe places to park in the field off SR 914.
Chipotle Mexican Grill is offering a buy-one-get-one (BOGO) entrée or kid’s meal for in-restaurant diners wearing a youth soccer jersey, during Labor Day weekend. Soccer fans ordering in-restaurant at Chipotle and wearing US Youth Soccer jerseys will score a BOGO on entrees and kid’s meals from August 31 through September 2. No coupon is required.
North Square Farmers Market is located next to Chambers Fort Park and open every Saturday morning, 8AM to Noon.
Nellie Fox Bowl is having a Dollar Day on September 2, 10AM – 8PM. The day will feature 2 free games for first responders and military, $1 bowling per game, $1 show rentals, $1 food/drink items.
QUINCY
Quincy Ox-Roast weekend is Friday – Monday, August 30 – September 2. The four day event is held at the Quincy Community Ox Roast Association grounds off Pa. 997 north of Waynesboro and features free admission, parking, bingo, food, and entertainment.
NEWVILLE/CARLISLE
Cumberland Drive-In Theatre is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on Labor Day Weekend. There will be a Double Feature on Friday and Saturday. Sunday is a Triple Feature plus a customer appreciation Chicken BBQ! Go here for more info.
Maple Lane Farm’s Corn Maze opens August 31. The corn maze highlights the Big Spring School District’s mascot, the bulldogs. In addition to exploring the maze, children can enjoy the corn pit. Fun photo ops with decorated hay bales too. Weekend Hours: Saturdays from 1PM-7PM and Sundays from 1PM-6PM. Open Labor Day Monday from 10AM -7PM. Tickets: $7.00 per person; ages 5 and younger are free. Maple Lane Farm is located at 150 Crossroad School Road.
McLain Celtic Festival will take place on Labor Day Weekend, August 31 & September 1. The festival in Carlisle at the Two Mile House celebrates Cumberland County’s Scots-Irish Heritage. Enjoy family-oriented fun featuring Celtic Music and Dance, Food, Highland Athletics, Border Collie demonstrations, and vendors selling Irish and Scottish goods. There will be an afternoon and evening of music at King’s Gap State Park on Sunday, September 1 at 3PM. Seasons will be kicking off the concert, followed by The Celtic Martins from 5:30PM-7:30PM. Bring your own chair or blanket and enjoy the music, food trucks, and the beautiful scenery of King’s Gap State Park. Free and open to all!
BOILING SPRINGS
Bring your family and friends to the Bubbler Foundation Festival at South Middleton Park on Sunday, September 1, 1PM – 5PM. There will be FREE SnoCones (while supplies last) and a variety of food for purchase provided by on-site food trucks. Free activities in the children’s area include face painting, balloon artists, bouncy houses, rock wall, bubble machines, fun prizes and more! The annual Labor Day fireworks will follow the festival beginning at dusk (around 8:15PM) at the Boiling Springs High School football field.
GETTYSBURG/HANOVER
The Hanover Chili Cook Off will be held on September 1 at Good Field in Hanover. Since 1995, The Hanover Chili Cook Off has become a staple for family entertainment, chili tasting and fundraising for local nonprofit organizations, all built around the PA State Chili Cooking Championship. Approximately 30 chili competitors, several non-chili food vendors, three musical acts, mucho beer and malts, and entertainers. For ticket info, go HERE.
CAMP HILL
Friendly, well-behaved dogs can go for a dip at the Camp Hill Borough pool on Monday, September 2 from 6PM-7PM. $20 per dog admission for members; owners (and humans of all ages) admitted free. $30 per dog for non-pool members. HARRISBURG
On August 31 through September 2, the City of Harrisburg will proudly present the annual Kipona Festival on Riverfront Park and City Island. The festival features more than 30 food vendors, 2 live music stages with more than 30 bands, Artist Market with handmade arts and crafts, Family Fun Zone, Native American Pow-Wow, Biergarten, Festival of Colors, canoe and kayak races, crab cake eating contest, carnival games, the Annual Duck Derby rubber duck race in the Susquehanna River to benefit Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and much more! Fireworks will be held on Sunday, September 1 at approximately 8:15PM.

A public dog swim will be held Labor Day, Monday, September 2 at Devon Manor Swim Club, 4400 Devonshire Road, Lower Paxton Township. Dogs under 30 pounds can swim 3:30PM to 5:30PM and dogs over 30 pounds can swim from 5:30PM to 7:30PM. Owners are welcome to swim with their dogs. Treat bags will be provided and the snack bar will be open. The cost is $5 per dog, with owner; $1 for each additional adult. Dogs must be friendly and up to date on shots.
MANHEIM
The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire is in its 39th season of bringing history to life. Every Saturday and Sunday through October 27, as well as Labor Day Monday, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire is open on the grounds of Mount Hope Estate. Residents of the 35-acre village are musicians, magicians, jousting knights, and royals. Each weekend throughout Faire season will showcase a unique theme that offers a different experience: August 31, September 1 & 2, 2019 – Heros of the Realm. Delgrosso’s Amusement Park is offering all guests an All-Day Fun Pass for just $10 on Labor Day! On Monday September 2, ride and slide for only $10. Rides and Water Park open at 11AM. All-Day Fun Pass gets you all the Amusement Park Rides & the Laguna Splash Water Park. This promotion can only be purchased at the ticket window at the Park.
