Fonthill Castle | A Fascinating “Castle for the New World”

Fonthill Castle located in Doylestown, Pennsylvania was the home of Henry Chapman Mercer.  Mercer completed Fonthill Castle in 1912.  The castle is hand-mixed concrete and features 44 rooms, 32 staircases, over 200 windows, 18 fireplaces, and Mercer’s renowned, handcrafted ceramic tiles.

Fonthill Castle is open for guided one-hour tours through a portion of Henry Mercer’s historic home Monday – Saturday 10AM – 5PM and Sunday Noon – 5PM.  Admission is $15 Adults, $8 Youth (6-17), and ages 5 and younger are free.  In addition, Fonthill hosts special celebrations for holidays like Fourth of July and events like beer festivals.

Fonthill Castle is a good 2 1/2 hour drive from Shippensburg, PA.  The Moravian Pottery & Tile Works is on the same property.  Within the concrete factory resembling a Spanish Mission, ceramists press and glaze tiles.  Tours are offered every half-hour and consist of a brief video followed by a walk through the facility.
